Chapter 01·The plastics report

Water

Drinking water is the highest-volume thing entering your body each day. Filter the source. Swap the bottle.

A 2024 paper in PNAS, by a team at Columbia and Rutgers, found about 240,000 plastic particles per liter in three major brands of bottled water. The cap-and-thread interface is where most of the shedding starts; the body of the bottle finishes the job. Bottled water is the worst single category we cover by volume.

Tap is usually better than bottled, but the USGS reported in 2023 that about 45% of US tap-water samples test positive for at least one PFAS compound. So the question stops being source vs. bottled and starts being which filter, and how good is its lab data. We narrowed the eight picks below to two daily-driver bottles and five filters that publish their NSF certifications in numbers, not slogans.

What earns a spot

  • NSF/ANSI 53 certification with publicly posted lab reports for lead, microplastics, and PFAS
  • Stainless steel or borosilicate glass at the drinking interface; no plastic spout, lid, or liner where water touches the mouth
  • Replacement-cartridge cost in writing, with a clear schedule

What gets rejected

  • Bottled water in plastic, including the gallon jugs and the office cooler
  • Pitcher filters that don't publish numerical microplastic and PFAS reduction
  • Insulated tumblers with a plastic lid (the lid is where heat-contact happens daily)

AquaSana Rhino EQ-1000 (bundled)Our pick
filterNSF/ANSI 42 · NSF/ANSI 61

AquaSana Rhino EQ-1000 (bundled)

Whole-home filtration. Every tap, every shower, every appliance. Removes chlorine, lead, mercury, PFAS, and microplastics from your entire home's water supply. Bundled package includes pre-filter, salt-free conditioner tank, and post-filter.

  • Whole-home
  • 1M gallons / 10 yrs
  • Salt-free conditioner
  • No drainage
WhyOur pick because the cert chain is the cleanest at this price point: NSF 42 for chlorine reduction, NSF 61 for tank-material safety, plus WQA on the contaminant claim chain. The bundled package (pre + conditioner + post) is what AquaSana sells as the complete system and what the $1,123 Amazon listing covers. AquaSana sells a newer WH-1000 model on their DTC site at ~$1,998; the EQ-1000 is the older, still-supported model at the more accessible price.

Bluevua RO100ROPOT-LiteBudget pick
filterWQA Gold Seal · NSF/ANSI 58

Bluevua RO100ROPOT-Lite

The entry-level counter RO. Real cert chain at the lowest defensible price. WQA-certified and NSF/ANSI 58 for reverse osmosis performance.

  • Countertop
  • Reverse osmosis
  • Installation-free
  • Remineralization
WhyIf a $475 RO feels like too much for a first swap, this is the floor we'd recommend. WQA Gold Seal plus NSF/ANSI 58 is a real performance chain — not just lead-free materials cert. Same RO mechanism as AquaTru in a smaller, cheaper unit.

Waterdrop M6H Instant Hot ROPremium pick
filter

Waterdrop M6H Instant Hot RO

Same RO mechanism as our pick, plus an instant-hot-water dispenser. This is a feature upgrade, not a water-quality upgrade. Pick this if the kitchen workflow win matters to you.

  • Countertop
  • Reverse osmosis
  • Instant hot water
  • Installation-free
WhyInstant boiling water at the counter plus full RO filtration. The convenience of a Zojirushi plus the cert chain of an RO unit, in one footprint. The honest read is the Amazon listing doesn't surface the NSF chain in the bullets the way AquaTru's does, so we treat the water-quality case as 'directionally equivalent to other RO units' until Waterdrop publishes a cleaner cert proof.

Waterdrop G3P600 Tankless ROOur pick
filterNSF/ANSI 42 · NSF/ANSI 58

Waterdrop G3P600 Tankless RO

Under-sink tankless RO with the strongest NSF cert chain in our entire under-sink lineup: NSF/ANSI 42, 58, and 372. Hidden plumbing, no counter footprint.

  • Under-sink
  • Tankless
  • 8-stage
  • 1.5:1 water ratio
WhyThe strongest cert chain (42 for aesthetic chlorine/taste, 58 for RO performance, 372 for lead-free materials) of any under-sink RO in our sweep. Tankless design means no storage tank under the cabinet, faster recovery, lower waste-water ratio than older RO units.

iSpring RCC7AK 6-Stage ROBudget pick
filterNSF/ANSI 58

iSpring RCC7AK 6-Stage RO

The cheapest under-sink RO with a real NSF cert chain. Adds a remineralization stage so the water doesn't taste flat. The honest budget pick for under-sink.

  • Under-sink
  • 6-stage
  • Remineralization
  • 75 GPD
Why$199 with NSF/ANSI 58 cert is the budget floor for under-sink RO. The remineralization stage matters because flat RO water tastes thin; the alkaline-mineral pass brings the taste back. Sold tens of thousands of units; the install instructions are detailed and most buyers DIY in 60-90 minutes.

SpringWell Whole-House Cartridge SystemAlt
filter

SpringWell Whole-House Cartridge System

Whole-home filtration with cartridge-based architecture. Every tap, every shower. Catalog choice if you'd rather not lock into AquaSana's tank format.

  • Whole-home
  • Cartridge system
  • Salt-free
WhyThe cartridge format is the operational difference from AquaSana's tank: easier to swap, smaller utility-closet footprint. SpringWell's brand-level certifications are real (IAPMO at the corporate level) but they aren't surfaced in the Amazon listing the way AquaSana's are. We include SpringWell as the catalog alternative; AquaSana remains our pick on cert-surface clarity.

Jolie Filtered ShowerheadOur pick

Jolie Filtered Showerhead

The shower water swap. KDF-55 plus calcium sulfite media removes chlorine and heavy metals before the water hits your skin. Universal fit; installs in minutes; replace the filter every 90 days.

  • Filtered showerhead
  • 1.8 GPM (CA/NY compliant)
  • Universal fit
  • 90-day filter cadence
WhyYou absorb more chlorinated water through your skin in a 10-minute hot shower than you typically drink from the tap. Jolie's the renter-friendly answer for the same exposure that whole-home filtration solves at $1,000+. KDF-55 plus calcium sulfite is the standard chlorine-removal media chain, third-party lab verified by Jolie (not NSF certified, but the chemistry is well-understood).
