Chapter 01·The plastics report

Cleaning + air

Where most household microplastic actually exits the home. And where indoor air gets its load.

A 2016 study at the University of Plymouth measured up to 700,000 microscopic fibers shed from a single load of synthetic clothing. Most don't get caught by municipal water treatment. The intercepts make the math better but only if they're in the drum: Cora Ball captures roughly 26%, Guppyfriend 75-86% on synthetic-only loads, an inline filter like PlanetCare 90% or higher.

The dish-side swaps are simpler. Plastic-bristle brushes shed into the sink. Microfiber cloths sell themselves as eco and are pure plastic; every wipe sheds onto the surface and into the air. The four air-quality picks below cover the rooms where indoor air gets its load: cooking, candles, and off-gassing. EPA's Total Exposure Assessment found indoor air typically runs 2-5x more polluted than outdoor.

What earns a spot

  • Natural-fiber bristles, cellulose, or wood handle at the dish interface
  • Refillable concentrate or paperboard packaging for cleaners
  • Laundry intercept with a published capture rate from a peer-reviewed source (Bren / UCSB or equivalent)
  • Air purifiers with AHAM CADR data published, not just "AQI 12" marketing

What gets rejected

  • Plastic-bristle dish brushes and microfiber cleaning cloths
  • "Eco" plastic-bottle cleaners with vague refill claims
  • Laundry intercepts with no third-party measurement
  • Air purifiers with no CADR rating, regardless of price

The science

  • Bren School (UCSB) · 2019

Microfiber capture rates of consumer laundry interceptsCora Ball captured ~26% of shed microfibers in mixed loads. Guppyfriend captured 75-86% on synthetic-only loads.

  • University of Plymouth · 2016

Microfiber shedding from synthetic apparel during washingA single 6kg wash load of synthetic clothing shed up to 700,000 microscopic fibers, most of which pass through municipal water treatment.

  • EPA Total Exposure Assessment Methodology study · 1985

Indoor vs. outdoor pollutant concentrations in US homesIndoor concentrations of common organic pollutants ran 2-5x higher than outdoor concentrations across the homes studied, with the gap larger during and after cooking and cleaning.
